Winnipeg, Manitoba - Red River Co-op is expanding its food store presence in Gimli, Manitoba, growing the number of Red River Co-op food stores serving Winnipeg and surrounding communities to seven.

Red River Co-op will be taking over ownership and operations of the Super A Foods at 55 Centre St. in Gimli as of Monday, July 8. Red River Co-op members can earn equity and cash back by using their membership number when making purchases at the new food store.

“Red River Co-op serves Gimli with fuel through our gas bar at 83 Centre St. and opening a food store in town was driven by a desire to add an additional service to our members,” said Red River Co-op CEO Doug Wiebe. “Because of Red River Co-op’s strong market performance and solid financial base, now is the perfect time to expand our food business with the support of our new employees.”

Kevin St. Martin has owned the Super A Foods in Gimli for 21 years alongside his wife, Cheryl, who works as the meat and deli manager. The family is handing over the keys to Red River Co-op so they can enjoy retirement together. Red River Co-op wishes them well and will continue the high level of service offered under St. Martin’s management of the location.

Plans are in the works to change over branding elements from Super A to the Co-op shield in the coming weeks. Red River Co-op is also working to finalize plans to upgrade this location to the latest image standards.

Adding a food store to the Gimli market is an opportunity for customers to become Red River Co-op members and enjoy lifetime membership benefits, including profit sharing. In 2018, Red River Co-op members shared in $41.1 million of profits.

To celebrate the transition, Red River Co-op is hosting a complimentary BBQ for the community at the food store over the lunch hour on Monday, July 8. All are welcome.
